After what feels like a lifetime of chasing perfection and being our own harshest critic, we are beginning to wake up to the fact that it’s OK TO FAIL.

It’s this very premise that journalist, author and podcaster Elizabeth Day hangs her hat. Reframing failure, she’s served us the reminder we needed - insert sigh of relief.

After 17 years of interviewing A-listers for national broadsheets and magazines, Day knew the world needed to hear something a little less than perfect, after realising her own life required a change of mindset too.

Enter her much celebrated podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, which delves into the lives of notables in a way that most traditional media doesn’t. Shying away from their typical highlights reel, Elizabeth asks guests to share the parts that haven’t gone right: including female footballer and hugely successful lawyer Eniola Aluko on failing the New York bar exam twice - and how it helped her on and off the field.

Day’s follow-on book - How to Fail: Everything I’ve Ever Learned From Things Going Wrong - has been a huge success (oh the irony) and it’s just as gloriously life-affirming. Part memoir, part manifesto it shows us how to fail so that we might succeed better. Lines such as “I failed at a marriage...divorced by 36 and I failed to have children” makes societies’ ‘failures’ seem freeing.

It’s exactly this championship of self-expression that makes her a Missoma woman. Just as we encourage you to celebrate your small wins with your Missoma ‘successories’, Day let slip to us that she’s purchased a few successories from us herself in recent years.

So. What did you learn today? Was it a biggy? Perhaps just something small. But in the words of Adam Pearson (S7, Ep 7) ‘failure is how we learn….failure is not the opposite of winning’.

ELIZABETH'S JEWELLERY STYLING

Elizabeth is styled here in her Missoma pieces, including the Lucy Williams Chunky Waffle Hoops and her favourite from the new TWISTED collection, the Marina Double Chain Necklace, which reminded her of a necklace her mother used to wear. Huxley the cat gave his approval and it’s definitely got ours.
