Want to know what's in your Missoma pieces? Our Senior Designer and Product Developer Kat talks us through each 'ingredient' that's used in our jewellery - and why we keep going back to them to make the pieces you love.

vermeil

As one of the first demi-fine brands (before it was coined demi-fine), we have always used gold vermeil. Starting with a sterling silver base, a thick 2.5 microns of real 18ct gold is then layered on top via electroplating. They're extra-durable to make them last longer - even on dainty styles.

18ct gold plated

All of our gold plated pieces are plated onto brass. In the same method as vermeil, they are then electroplated with two microns of gold. None of our gold plated pieces are 'flash plated,' 'dipped' or 'gold-tone' - they have a thicker 18ct gold layer to ensure these larger styles will stand the test of time.

sterling silver

Traditionally, pure silver was too soft to use for jewellery making, so sterling silver was created by adding alloys like copper for strength and durability. The '925' mark on these pieces is the symbol for authentic sterling silver, which means it is 92.5% pure silver. We also finish all silver pieces with a layer of rhodium (known for its anti-tarnish properties).

sterling silver plated

Just like our gold plated pieces, this metal is not just used for colour - it's a hard-wearing layer that is electroplated onto brass. We use rhodium as the last layer to act as an anti-tarnish layer for good measure!

p.s. a note on nickel

None of our suppliers add nickel to our jewellery or any nickel layers to any of our platings. However, nickel cannot be extracted 100% and although it's present at a legal percentage of less than 0.01%, if you're hyper-sensitive it's best to avoid wearing any kind of jewellery, just to be on the safe side.
